Army retain title
QUETTA, Oct 5: Army retained Quaid-i-Azam Trophy and Wapda got Wajid Ali Shah Cup with clear margin in the 29th National Games, which concluded on Tuesday at Ayub Stadium.
The games were declared close with formal announcement by the chief guest at the ceremony. As soon as the announcement was made, the Olympic flame was extinguished and the Olympic flag was lowered at the Ayub Stadium.
Pakistan Army and Wapda fought closely for the championship trophy but at the end Army won it with clear margin of 226 medals, 95 golds, 92 silvers and 40 bronze medals.
Wapda got 182 medals including 88 golds, 35 silvers and 59 bronzes while Punjab took third position by taking 66 medals, with 21 golds, 26 silver and 19 bronze medals. Navy remained at fourth with 71 medals.
This included eight golds, 26 silver and 37 bronzes. Railways took 73 medals comprising nine golds,22 silvers and 42 bronzes and remained at fifth. Sindh got sixth position with 31 medals, four golds, nine silvers and 18 bronze medals, Police got seventh position with one gold, 10 silvers and 18 bronze medals.
Balochistan got three gold, seven silver and 14 bronze, PAF got three golds, and 10 bronze medals while NWFP grabbed only three bronze medals. HEC remained medal-less. In all 25 men and 11 women sports event were held in the games that Quetta hosted for the third time.
Around 35000 athletes from various eleven units including the provinces, departmental and services took part in 25 men and 11 women's events while in 22 athletics event women participated in 20 events, except marathon and steeplechase. The closing ceremony ended with a spectacular fire works display. -APP
