ISLAMABAD, Oct 2: Teenager Kiran Khan won four gold medals for Wapda and also set two new records in the National Games women's swimming competitions on Saturday.

Pakistan Army and Punjab collected one gold medal each out of the six finals held on the first day of the two-day competitions at indoor swimming pool of Pakistan Sports Complex.

Kiran struck gold in 400 metres freestyle with a new record of 5min,00.77sec while her timing of 1min,11.40sec was also a new record for 100 metres butterfly.

Besides these two record-studded golds, Kiran also triumphed in the finals of 200 metres individual medley (2min,40.56sec) and 200 metes back-stroke (2min,42.74sec).

Mehrunnisa Khan got Pakistan Army the gold medal in 100 metres breast-stroke with a time of 1min,27.02sec. Taking away the gold in 4x100 metres freestyle relay with a timing of 4min,55.60sec was the Punjab quartet of Afia Shah, Eesha Khan, Rida Sabahat and Ayesha Akram.

Wapda thus led the table with 102 points with Kiran also garnering 15 points bonus each from her two new records.

Punjab were trailing on runners spot with 88 points from one gold, three silver and as many bronze medals while Pakistan Army were third so far with 62 points from one gold, three silver and one bronze medal.

Sindh were fourth with 37 points from its two bronze medals while NWFP were fifth with four points.

Winning three silver medals each were Pakistan Army and Punjab. The Army girls to win silver medals were Aesha Tajwar in 400 metres freestyle (5:35.65), Sana Wahid in 100 metres butterfly (1:15.35) and the quartet of Aisha Tajwar, Rema Qureshi, Mehrunnisa and Sana Wahid (4:58.83) in 4x100 metres freestyle relay.

The Punjab girls to claim silver medals were Rida Sabahat in 200 metres back-stroke (2:56.77), Khadija Khalid in 100 metres breast-stroke (1.:31.40) and again Rida Sabahat in 200 metres individual medley (2:56.40).

Gymnastics team gold

Army snatched the gold medal in gymnastics team event at Browne Gymkhana Hall on Saturday.

Soldiers collected 135.25 points to finish on the top. Wapda with 125.35 points secured the silver and Pakistan Railways got the bronze with 99.95 points and Punjab getting fourth spot with 96.30 points.

The individual events of the competition will start from Sunday.

Punjab on top

Favourites Punjab, PAF, WAPDA maintained their winning spree in the round robin league squash event at PSB Sports Complex court on Saturday.

Punjab defeated Army 3-0, PAF beat Sindh by same margin and WAPDA prevailed over Railways by identical scoreline.

In the other matches, Balochistan beat Higher Education Commission (HEC) 3-0 and NWFP beat Balochistan 3-0.

In the women competition Army beat Punjab 3-0, Wapda beat Sindh 3-0.-APP

Our Sports Correspondent adds from Lahore: Olympian Rubab Raza has been ruled out from representing Punjab in the ongoing National Games due to left shoulder injury.

Talking to Dawn on Saturday, 13-year old Rubab, who represented Pakistan in the Athens Olympics-2004 said that she fell from the stairs of her home two days back and suffered a hairline fracture in the shoulder.

Rubab said that after recovery she would start training to participate in the SAF Games to be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka next year.
