Lawmakers fail to file statement of assets

By Our Staff Reporter

ISLAMABAD, Oct 1: All but 220 of the total 1,170 members of the National Assembly, Senate and the provincial assemblies have not submitted their annual statements of assets with the Election Commission by the deadline which expired on Thursday.

Officials told Dawn that 950 parliamentarians and provincial assemblies members had so far filed the statements. Those who failed to meet the deadline still have till Oct 15 to submit the required data before the Chief Election Commissioner, Irshad Hasan Khan, would announce the suspension of their membership, an official said.

Under the law, the CEC could suspend their membership till the filing of the statement of accounts to the commission. In case a statement was later found to be false, the CEC could proceed against the member on the charge of corruption.

The source, however, said that some of members did file the statements on Friday, many of which had even been filled wrongly or had not been compiled by chartered accountants.
