Draft law against honour killings being examined
By Our Reporter
LAHORE, Sept 27: The Pakistan Muslim League Parliamentary Party in the National Assembly headed by Rai Mansab Ali is examining the draft law against honour killings and karo kari for enactment.
PML Women Wing president and Adviser to Prime Minister on Women Development Ms Nilofar Bakhtiyar gave out this while talking to newsmen at the Muslim League House here on Monday.
She said the draft had been named as law against crimes in the name of honour. It sought to include killing in the name of honour in the definition of murder besides bringing the acts like amputation of nose or ears of women or hurting them in any other manner under its purview.
The law, she said, would impose a ban on handing over of women to others for truce and prescribe a punishment for it. The name of the 'wali' would be excluded from the list of the murderers and the provincial governments would be barred from remitting sentences awarded in cases registered under the proposed law.
She said the government had decided to go for legislation against the honour killings first because it had been supported by the chief ministers of all the four provinces and PML President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain. Moreover, the issue was less controversial than the Hudood Ordinances.
Ms Bakhtiyar said the government was also seized of the Hudood Ordinances issue and a senate committee headed by SM Zafar had debated it on Saturday. The government, however, wanted a national debate on the issue before taking any decision in respect of the controversial ordinances.
About President Pervez Musharraf's uniform, she said the party supported the point of view of the Punjab chief minister on the subject that wearing of uniform by the president was in the national interest and necessary for fighting terrorism and ensuring continuity of his policies.
She said the opposition should stop the politics of uniform and opt for the politics of issues instead. She said that the PML Women Wing would propose further increase in representation of women in the assemblies.
