ISLAMABAD, Sept 26: Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) Senator Prof Khurshid Ahmad has said President Gen Pervez Musharraf does not feel confident to derive his power and authority from the Constitution , parliament and the presidency and considers himself secure in military uniform in violation of the Constitution and democratic norms.

Expressing his shock and anguish over President Musharraf's statement in the US that Gen Charles de Gaulle had also kept his uniform, Prof Ahmed said it showed his abysmal ignorance of contemporary history.

"Gen de Gaulle after a very distinguished military career organized resistance against German occupation of France during the World War-II and also against their collaborators, particularly Marshal Peteir, who headed the Vicky government," he said.

Gen de Gaulle became the president of the provisional government in October 1945. He, however, resigned in January 1946 because he was unable to carry the support of the French people, Prof Ahmed said.

"Again in early 1960s, he was invited to assume power and from 1962 till 1968 he ruled as president on the basis of elections and support of the people for the constitutional amendments he proposed. And when his proposed amendments failed to get the popular support, he left silently in 1968," the MMA leader pointed out.

"Throughout this period, Gen de Gaulle was the supreme commander of the forces by virtue of being president of the republic, but he was not chief of staff of the army," he said.
