LAHORE: PBC reiterates demand for withdrawal of amendment

By Our Correspondent

LAHORE, Sept 25: The Punjab Bar Council has reiterated its demand that the government should withdraw its move to amend the Legal Practitioners and Bar Council Act and allow lawyers to perform their professional duty without fear.

A resolution adopted by the council's general body here on Saturday said the government move to insert Section 54(1) in the act would hinder the professional working of lawyers as the move sought the superior judiciary to take disciplinary action against lawyers for misconduct.

The power was being exercised by the council which thought the amendment would result in a consistent conflict between the bench and the bar and erode further the independence of the judiciary, it added.
