Aamir blasts century as Zimbabwe struggle

LAHORE, Sept 24: Middle order batsman Aamir Bashir struck an unbeaten 100 and tailender Riaz Afridi scored breezy 66 as PCB Patrons XI declared their first innings at 529 for nine wickets on the second day of the four-day match against Zimbabwe at Qadhafi Stadium on Friday.

Aamir and Riaz, inspired by brilliant century by their skipper (130) and useful (94) by vice captain, Bazid Khan put the inexperienced touring side bowlers to sword as the home side resumed at overnight score of 352 for five wickets.

At stumps, Zimbabwe were struggling at 184 for four wickets, still requiring 193 runs to avoid follow-on. Zimbabwe were given some relief by Brendon Taylor who was unbeaten 90 after a middle order collapse. Taylor had so far struck 15 boundaries and one six and the other not out batsman was skipper Tatenda Taibu who has yet to open his account.

Pacer Yasir Arafat took two wickets for 30 runs. Taylor and V. Sibanda (34) added 81 runs for the fourth wicket to help their side to recover from being 106 for three.

Aamir overnight at 25 went on to complete his century with the help of one six and nine fours, consuming 170 balls in 262 minutes. Yasir, the other overnight batsman, progressed to 26 after starting at 14.

Then Riaz showed his prowess with the bat, further adding to the misery of the Zimbabwe attack which failed to stop the flow of stroke play of the Patrons XI batsmen. medium pacer Rainsford finished with two for 91.
