KARACHI, Sept 24: Some students of the Dawood College of Engineering and Technology on Friday called on the Vice Chancellor, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro, Dr Abdul Qadeer Rajput, at his office and apprised him of the boycott of classes at their college.

Meanwhile, the students of DCET continued their boycott of classes for the 12th consecutive day and held a protest demonstration at the college building.

According to a press release of the students action committee, DCET, the delegation told the VC of Mehran varsity that students were not taking classes for the last 12 days in protest, and that the college administration was sending "fake" attendance to the varsity.

They said the DCET administration was giving the impression that classes at the college were being held regularly, which was not true. Dr Rajput told the visiting students that the situation at DCET was being closely observed, and keeping in view media reports regarding the students' boycott of classes, fake attendance sent by the college would not be considered.

He further assured them that if required, and if classes were not held and lectures not delivered to students, the DCET administration would not be allowed to hold exams. The DCET students also called on the registrar and controller of examinations, Mehran varsity and sought their assistance in resolving their issue.

Meanwhile, the spokesman for the DCET, Mushtaq A Shaikh, on Friday said that the issue pertaining to registration of the Dawood College of Engineering and Technology with the Pakistan Engineering Council would be resolved soon.

He said a meeting of the PEC was expected in Islamabad and he was optimistic that the DCET would get registered at the earliest. The spokesman criticized the students of a particular group for creating trouble in the institution just to further their own interests at the cost of other students.

The spokesman also described as false a news item appearing in a section of the press in which it was alleged that law enforcement agencies had resorted to baton charge. - APP/PPI
