Assembly resolution termed violation of Sindh's mandate

HYDERABAD, Sept 23: Protest rallies were held in all district headquarters of Sindh on Thursday by the People's Party Parliamentarians in protest against the passage of a resolution by the Sindh Assembly
urging Gen Pervez Musharraf to continue holding the office of the army chief together with the presidency.
District leaders of the party lashed out at members of the Sindh Assembly who had voted in favour of the resolution. They said MPAs had betrayed their voters as the resolution had been adopted against their wishes.
In Hyderabad, the city chapter of the People's Party Parliamentarians observed a black day and staged a protest walk against the passage of a resolution. They hoisted black flags on their homes and wore black armbands.
They marched from the party's office to the press club and raised slogans for the restoration of democracy in the country. Speaking on the occasion, the acting president of the city chapter, Aman Siyal, said Sept 22 was the blackest day in the history of Sindh as supporters of dictatorship in the Sindh Assembly adopted a resolution in favour of uniform against the wishes of people.
Mr Siyal claimed that the resolution was a flagrant violation of the Constitution. Mir Fateh Talpur said Gen Pervez Musharraf wanted to break Pakistan and added the resolution was a betrayal of Sindh's mandate to the PPP.
Fayaz Ali Shah, Saleem Shah Bukhari, Aftab Khanzado and Ghulam Rasool Kalhoro spoke on the occasion. The rally adopted several resolutions demanding prosecution of those MPAs who had voted in favour of the resolution.
In Tando Muhammad Khan, former MPA Mohammad Ali Lakho led a rally, which blocked the Hyderabad Badin road for quite a sometime. Activists of the party raised slogans against President Musharraf and members of the assembly who had voted in favour of uniform.
SANGHAR: Members of the PPP staged a sit-in at the Shaheed chowk in Khipro against the resolution. The district president of the party, Sarfaraz Rajar, Zahoor Alam Rind and Ghulam Ali Wassan led the protest.
NAWABSHAH: Workers of the People's Party Parliamentarians staged a demonstration against the resolution passed in favour of President Musharraf's uniform in the Sindh Assembly. They said members who favoured the resolution were traitors and non-patriotic and the president in uniform would never be accepted.
KHAIRPUR: Activists of the PPP took out a procession against the resolution. MPA Zahid Bhambhan and MPA Naeem Kharal led the rally. The protesters were carrying placards and banners inscribed with slogans of "Go-Musharraf-go" and "President in uniform not wanted".
MPA Zahid Bhambhan and MPA Naeem Kharal said Sindhis do not accept the resolution passed by the Sindh Assembly. They said instead of solving water shortage, law and order and unemployment problems, the president wanted to prolong his military rule.
BADIN: Over 200 activists of the PPP observed a sit-in on the Badin-Karachi highway against the resolution. Led by Ramzan Chandio and Ghafoor Nizamani, they also took out a procession which marched on the National Highway towards Shahnawaz chowk. The protesters were baton charged when some of them burnt old tyres on the road and disturbed traffic.
NAUSHAHRO FEROZE: Activists of the People's Party Parliamentarians took out a procession against the resolution. A large number of activists of the party, led by the district president, Malhar Rajpar, Aftab Shah and Pir Qurban, took out a procession from the PPP office to press club.
MIRPURKHAS: Activists of the party took out a procession led by district president Noor Hassan Chandio from the party office against the resolution.
Carrying banners and placards and wearing black armband, they marched through the main roads upto the Municipal complex. They said MPAs who had voted in favour of the resolution against wishes of the people would be made accountable.
JACOBABAD: A big procession was taken out by the PPP against the Sindh Assembly resolution. The protesters were carrying banners and placards and raised slogans against President in uniform. The protesters led by Fida Mirani. They blocked the road for an hour.
DADU: Hundreds of activists of the PPP took out a procession against a resolution. They were led by MPA Marvi Mazhar, district general secretary of the party, Dost Ali Jaiser, Kulsoom Chandio and Almas Panhwar.
MPA Marvi said Gen Pervez Musharraf was unelected president of the country. She said the treasury had passed the resolution in support of Gen Musharraf to keep army uniform, which was illegal.
She demanded that the resolution be recalled. Meanwhile, People's Party Parliamentarians leaders MPA Zahid Ali Bhurgari, Sagheer Qureshi and others have said that the day the Sindh Assembly adopted a resolution in favour of the president's uniform was the blackest day in the history of Sindh.
In a joint statement issued in Hyderabad on Wednesday, the PPP leaders said that the resolution had been adopted in utter disregard of the sentiments of people of Sindh. They said that the people would not forgive the assembly members who had voted in favour of the uniform.
