Musharraf a flop leader: PML-N

Published September 23, 2004

KARACHI, Sept 22: The PML-N has deplored that despite enjoying sweeping powers, Gen Musharraf had failed to deliver.

Information Secretary Siddiq-ul-Farooq of the party, speaking at a news conference here on Wednesday, was referring to Gen Musharraf's remarks that he was reviewing his decision to doff his uniform due the situation obtaining in the country with regard to water issue, law and order, etc.

Accusing Gen Musharraf of bent upon implementing a foreign agenda, the PML-N leader claimed that the general had failed to deliver even in his fundamental obligation of defending the country as army chief.

In this context, Mr Farooq cited the Siachin and Kargil affairs where, according to him, the losses inflicted on Pakistan appeared to more than those the country had suffered in the 1965 war.

Mr Farooq described the situation in Balochistan as 'extremely grave', saying that there was no unpatriotic element in that province and the stance of those seeking their rights did not amount to treason.

Expressing concern over the situation in Wana, he contended that any problem could have been sorted out through democratic and peaceful means instead of resorting to military operation.

Mr Farooq accused the ruling clique in Islamabad of compromising on the Kashmir and nuclear issues. He also claimed that the government had given bases to the FBI and was protecting US interests.

Such a situation, the PML-N leader apprehended, could lead to a civil war in the country. Recalling that his party had remained opposed to the idea of president in uniform, he said that both the ARD and PPP had now announced launching of a massive movement against the general's intention to continue with both his offices. He reiterated his party's stand that Gen Musharraf was unacceptable, either in uniform or otherwise, as president.
