10 Pakistanis held in Spain charged with fraud, drug

MADRID, Sept 18: Ten Pakistanis arrested during an anti- terror sweep in Spain have been detained for using false documents and drug possession but have not been linked to a terror network, authorities said on Saturday.

Judge Ismael ordered the detention of Pakistanis, who were suspected of belonging to a "radical religious support network", when they were arrested in Barcelona on Wednesday, citing charges of use of false passports and fake credit cards and possession of an unspecified amount of heroin.

But he ruled that there was insufficient evidence to put them under preventive detention based on alleged links with any terrorist group.

He said documents seized at their homes, including books linked to Al Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden, were easily available in bookstores.

They were picked up in northern and central districts of Barcelona.

Their investigation is not connected to the probe into the March 11 attacks on commuter trains in Madrid, which left 191 people dead and 1,900 hurt.-AFP
