Myskina falls as Kuznetsova advances

NUSA DUA, Sept 16: French Open champion Anastasia Myskina made an early exit from Bali's WTA tennis tournament on Thursday as fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova easily won her first match since lifting her maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open.

The top-seeded Myskina made no excuses for the 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 defeat in the second round of the Wismilak International event against 61st-ranked Italian Maria Elena Camerin.

It was Camerin's first-ever victory against a top 10-ranked player. Fellow Russians Kuznetsova and Nadia Petrova both eased into the quarter-finals in straight sets. Kuznetsova, the second seed, beat Australia's Samantha Stosur 6-4, 6-4, as fourth-seeded Petrova saw off Spaniard Marta Marrero 7-5, 6-1.

SECOND ROUND RESULTS (SINGLES): Tathiana Garbin (ITA) bt Marion Bartoli (FRA) 6-0, 2-0 retired; Marlene Weingartner (GER) bt Aiko Nakamura (JPN) 7-5, 6-3; Maria Elena Camerin (ITA) bt Anastasia Myskina (RUS) 6-3, 1-6, 6-2; Nadia Petrova (RUS) bt Marta Marrero (ESP) 7-5, 6-1; Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS) bt Samantha Stosur (AUS) 6-4, 6-4; Angelique Widjaja (INA) bt Anca Barna (GER) 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

FERRERO OUSTED

BEIJING: Second seed Juan Carlos Ferrero followed fellow Spaniard Carlos Moya out of the China Open on Thursday when he was humbled 6-4 6-4 by American Kevin Kim in the second round.

Top seed Moya went out to French qualifier Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the first round on Wednesday. German Rainer Schuettler also made an early exit, the fourth seed losing 7-6 6-1 to resurgent Russian Mikhail Youzhny.

Third seed David Nalbandian bucked the trend, however, overcoming Taiwan's Lu Yen-hsun 6-7 6-4 6-4. The Argentine's quarter-final opponent will be Jarkko Nieminen of Finland, who ousted seventh-seeded American Taylor Dent 6-3 7-5.

Nalbandian had to play twice as organisers tried to clear a backlog of matches caused by two days of rain at the inaugural $500,000 tournament. He was also taken to three sets by Dane Kristian Pless in the morning before prevailing 7-6 3-6 6-3.

Like Moya, Ferrero played as if his mind was already on this month's Davis Cup semi-final against France. The 24-year-old made 42 unforced errors and failed to convert any of his eight break points against his 143rd-ranked opponent.

Dominik Hrbaty, a quarter-finalist at the U.S. Open earlier this month crushed Italian Davide Sanguinetti 6-2 6-2. The eighth-seeded Slovak plays Youzhny in the last eight.

Marat Safin, bidding to win his first title in two years, also had to play twice but the giant Russian efficiently moved on and will next face Kim. Safin thrashed Chinese wildcard Lu Hao 6-2 6-2 after beating American Alex Bogomolov 6-4 7-5 in the morning.

RESULTS (SECOND ROUND): 5-Marat Safin (Russia) beat Lu Hao (China) 6-2 6-2; 3-David Nalbandian (Argentina) beat Lu Yen-hsun (Taiwan) 6-7 (6-8) 6-4 6-4; 6-Paradorn Srichaphan (Thailand) beat Noam Okun (Israel) 6-3 3-6 7-6 (8-6); Jarkko Nieminen (Finland) beat 7-Taylor Dent (U.S.) 6-3 7-5; Lee Hyung-taik (South Korea) beat Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (France) 7-6 (9-7) 6-3; Kevin Kim (U.S.) beat 2-Juan Carlos Ferrero (Spain) 6-4 6-4; 8-Dominik Hrbaty (Slovakia) beat Davide Sanguinetti (Italy) 6-2 6-2; Mikhail Youzhny (Russia) beat 4-Rainer Schuettler (Germany) 7-6 (7-4) 6-1

FIRST ROUND: 5-Marat Safin (Russia) beat Alex Bogomolov (U.S.) 6-4 7-5; 3-David Nalbandian (Argentina) beat Kristian Pless (Denmark) 7-6 (7-5) 3-6 6-3; Lu Hao (China) beat Prakash Amritraj (India) 4-6 6-4 6-2. -Agencies
