MIRPURKHAS, Sept 16: Residents of Pithoro town on Wednesday staged demonstrations outside the office of the director of the Nara canal area water board and the press club to protest against water shortage at the tail-end area of the Khai distributary.

They were led by Mukesh Kumar Jeswani and Saleem Khatri of the Sindh Tarraqi Pasand Party, Suleman Mahar of the Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz, Faisal Bhatti and Israr Ansari of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Ashiq Shoro and Ram Chand Khatri of the PPP.

Two councillors, Parveen Akhtar and Laung Mangrio, also joined the protest. The protesters raised slogans against irrigation officials for their alleged involvement in water theft.

It may be mentioned that water reservoirs in Pithoro Town have dried up due to water shortage. The protestors demanded that higher authorities should take immediate notice of water shortage in the town.

They said watercourses at the head of the Khai distributary had been tempered. They said there was no water in the town for the last several days and tankers were supplying water. They urged authorities to ensure water supply and register cases against responsible people.

CLASH: Tension prevailed in the Government Shah Abdul Latif Science college on Thursday following a clash between activists of the All-Pakistan Mohajir Students Organization and Islami Jamiat-i-Tuleba.

Spokesman of the IJT, Mehmood Ahmed in a press release alleged that activists of the APMSO attacked workers of the IJT with sticks and iron rods. They took away two workers and tortured them in a 'torture cell'.

They were released with threats of dire consequences. Activists of the IJT staged a demonstration outside the press club and raised slogans against the APMSO. The protesters led by Nazim IJT Mirpurkhas Asim Shaikh described the college attack an act of terrorism.
