KARACHI: Indictment of Jundullah activists deferred

KARACHI, Sept 16: An anti-terrorism court acquitted on Thursday an accused in the murder case of a sub-inspector. Judge Arshad Noor Khan of the ATC-5 exonerated Qurban Ali Magsi from the charges while giving him the benefit of doubt.
The defendant, represented by Zulfiqar Ali Kehar, was prosecuted for killing SI Zahid Hussain Abidi during a shootout with police in Gulshan-i-Iqbal on June 17, 2000. According to prosecution, accused Qurban Ali Magsi and co- accused Amanullah Magsi alias Shahbaz were spotted near National Apartments while they were going in a snatched Toyota Corolla.
The accused allegedly opened fire when the police party tried to intercept them fatally wounding the sub-inspector. Accused Amanullah Magsi also sustained a bullet wound in his chest and he was arrested on the spot with an unlicensed pistol. Accused Qurban, however, managed to flee the scene and he was later declared an absconder by the court.
The same court had earlier on Sept 28, 2000, sentenced co-accused, Amanullah Magsi, to death for the murder of the police official. Later, the police arrested Qurban Ali Magsi as an absconder and charge-sheeted him in the case.
DEFERRED: An Anti-Terrorism Court in Karachi on Thursday fixed Sept 18 for indictment against 10 activists of the Jundullah in corps commander motorcade attack case, adds PPI.
The matter was fixed for framing of charges before ATC Judge Feroz Mehmood Bhatti against the accused but it was deferred till Sept 18 as two accused, Danish Imam and Rao Khalid, told the court that they were unable to engage counsel and prayed the court to engage Maqboolur Rehman and Khalid Khan Urshi for contesting the case on their behalf.
Attaur Rehman alias Ibrahim, Shahzad Ahmed Bajwa, Yaqoob Saeed, Uzair Ahmed, Shoaib Siddiqui, Danish Inam, Najeebullah, Khurrum Saifullah, Shahzad Mukhtar and Khalid Rao are charged with attacking the motorcade of the corps commander on June 10 in Clifton area, which resulted in the death of 10 people, including six army personnel.
They were booked under Sections 302, 324, 404, 34 PPC with Section 7 of Anti-Terrorism Act 1997 Section 3, 4 and 5 of Explosives Act. Adnan Shah alias Tipu, Mohammad Qasim, Maaz, Shahab, Bilal, Tayyeb, Hammad and Fasih were declared absconders in the case.
Special Public Prosecutors Iqtedar Ali Hashmi and Maula Bux Bhatti are representing the state. Meanwhile, the same court put off hearing till Sept 18 against 10 activists of Jundullah in six cases pertaining to blasts and law-enforcers killing cases.
They are charged with killing five policemen at Gulistan-i-Jauhar, engineering two car blasts near PACC, throwing grenade in front of Pakistan Bible Society and planting a bomb in a hi-roof, attacking a ranger mobile van, bomb blast in the car parking of Marina Club and killing of two policemen Shaukat Ali and Nawab Ali in Saudabad area. Mustufa Memon, Adnan Memon, Tajamul Lodhi Mohammad Mushtaq and M R Syed are representing the defence side.
KIDNAPPING CASE: Justice Khilji Arif Hussain of Sindh High Court, who is also administrative judge of Anti-Terrorism Courts in Karachi, on Thursday accepted charge-sheet against four kidnappers for their alleged involvement in a kidnapping for ransom case and sent their case to the ATC-V for trial.
Junaidur Rehman, Fida Hussain Khoso, who are stated to be sons of Rehman Ansari, deputy controller of the KBCA and DPO Nadir Khan Khoso of Larkana, respectively, Qurban Ali Khoso and Abdul Rasheed were arrested in connection with the kidnapping of Ahmed Naeem from Gizri area for ransom.
According to police, the accused, in collaboration with other co-accused kidnapped Naeem, son of Mohammad Ahmed, a motorcar dealer, on June 11 from DHA and demanded Rs50 million for release of abductee who was later released after delivering a ransom of Rs6.1 million in UK.
Police also submitted charge sheet against Qurban Ali Khoso, Fida Hussain Khoso and Junaidur Rehman for kidnapping Mohammad Ali, a builder, for ransom. The case has been sent to ATC-I for trial by the administrative judge.
