SRINAGAR, Sept 14: Indian troops shot dead four freedom fighters in occupied Kashmir while Mujahideen killed a soldier and a civilian in separate shootings, police said on Tuesday.

Three Mujahideen died in a clash on Tuesday with soldiers in the Bandipora area of northern Baramulla district, a police spokesman said, adding the clash began when troops cordoned off an area following a tip-off.

He said another Kashmiri fighter was shot dead in a clash in Sogam village in northern Kupwara district. "Two soldiers were injured during the fighting," he said. Separately, a soldier was killed in an ambush by Mujahideen in southern Kathua district overnight while freedom fighters shot dead a civilian in southern Doda district, police said, adding the motive was unknown.

There has been no let-up in violence since the foreign ministers of India and Pakistan ended early last week their first meeting in three years and pledged to press ahead with a fragile peace process between two countries.

PROTEST: Meanwhile, six students were injured on Tuesday when police used batons and fired teargas to disperse students protesting the arrest of a teacher in Srinagar, witnesses said.

The teacher was among several thousand Kashmiris who took part in a funeral procession for two Mujahideen killed in a weekend suicide attack on a police camp in Srinagar.
