KARACHI: DCET students continue to protest

KARACHI, Sept 14: The Students of the Dawood College of Engineering and Technology on Tuesday held another protest demonstration at the Karachi Press Club for restoration of their college's registration with the Pakistan Engineering Council.

Carrying banners and placards, the DCET students including females, chanted slogans against the PEC authorities and DCET Principal Saleem Chaudhry, demanding authorities that he be removed for his alleged "incompetence".

Speaking on the occasion, students deplored that the college's principal called in the police and the Rangers every time they tried to initiate a protest against the cancellation of DCET's registration by the PEC.

"We were compelled to take to the streets due to the attitude of the principal," they said, adding that arrangement of teachers and equipment for labs was the responsibility of the college administration and the principal. The DCET students said they had staged sit-ins at various roundabouts in the city to draw the attention of authorities towards their issue, but to no avail.

The protesting students appealed to President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz to take notice of the situation at DCET and play their role otherwise, students might adopt other modes of protest. Later, the protesting students tried to take out a rally from the press club to their institution, but called it off on the intervention of the police and Rangers.

CLARIFICATION: All necessary steps are being taken to ensure accreditation of the Dawood College of Engineering and Technology (DCET) Karachi by the Pakistan Engineering Council.

This was announced by a spokesman for the institution in a statement on Tuesday, while referring to a news item that appeared in a section of the press regarding demand by a group of students to restore DCET's registration.

The spokesman pointed out that accreditation of the DCET with the PEC was expected in the next four to six weeks time. - PPI/APP
