Inam named coach for Davis Cup tie


ISLAMABAD, Sept 11: Former Pakistan no.1 Inamul Haq has been appointed coach for the upcoming Davis Cup tie against New Zealand here, it was officially learnt on Saturday.

The winner of the Sept 24-26 tie at Islamabad Club clay courts will stay in Group I of Davis Cup, Asia-Oceania Zone, while the losers will be relegated to Group II.

Six players, including Aqeel Khan and Aisamul Haq who are currently playing abroad, have been invited to the training camp to be run by Inamul Haq.

Of the remaining players, three reported on the first day of the camp on Saturday while the fourth, Nomi Qamar, will arrive here from Karachi on Sunday.

The New Zealand tennis team is scheduled to reach on Sept 20.

The players who have already reported to are Asim Shafik, Shehzad Khan and Wasif Cheema.

Aqeel, the architect of Pakistan's victories at home against China and South Korea in recent years, is currently playing Futures Tournaments in India.

Both these players are expected here a week or so before the commencement of the tie against New Zealand.-APP
