Aqeel clinches ITF trophy in India


ISLAMABAD, Sept 11: Pakistan No.1 Aqeel Khan has clinched the singles title in the Indian Futures Tennis Tournament while another internationally known Pakistani, Aisamul Haq Qureshi , has advanced to the semifinals of Asian Championship in Uzbekistan, according to reports available here on Saturday.

Aqeel outgunned Tai-Wei Liu of Taiwan in a well- contested three-set match 7-6, 6-1, 6-1 to win the Indian Futures Tournament at Hyderabad.

Aqeel's victory in India followed his triumphs in the three legs of Pakistan Satellite, including Masters, which concluded last week.

He gained maximum 36 points from the three victories in Pakistan, setting a record in the tennis history of the country.

Pakistan Tennis Federation is sponsoring Aqeel's participation in the two Indian Futures tournaments. The second tournament will be played in New Delhi.

International Tennis Federation arranges "Futures, Satellites and Masters" tennis competitions to enable players to gather international ranking points.

Aisamul Haq Qureshi qualified for the semifinals of Asian Tennis Championship in Uzbekistan by beating 8th seed Alexey Kedriouk of Kazakhastan 6-4, 7-6(9).

The following were the results of Aqeel's matches in Indian Futures Tournament.

First round: Aqeel Khan bt Ranjeet Viralimurugesam (India) 7-6 (5), 6-3

Second round: Aqeel Khan bt Vikas Punna (India) 6-0, 6-0

Quarterfinal: Aqeel Khan bt Vijay Kannan of India 6- 3, 7-6 (5)

Semifinal: Aqeel Khan bt Chris Kown (USA)

Final: Aqeel Khan bt Tai-Wei Liu (Taiwan) 7-6, 6-1, 6-1.-APP
