MMA protests against Wana operation

Dawn Report

HYDERABAD, Sept 11: On the call of the Muttahida Majlis-i- Amal, processions were taken out throughout Sindh on Saturday in protest against the Wana operation, raids on seminaries, alleged harassment of Ulema and the US policies.

The protest demonstrations coincided with the third annivarsary of the September 11 incident.

In Hyderabad, a rally was held at the Kohinoor Chowk where the provincial and local leaders of the MMA delivered speeches.

MMA leader and provincial Amir of Jamaat-i-Islami Dr Mumtaz Ali Memon said that the America had failed to prove in its inquiry report that Muslims had been involved in the September 11 incident.

He said that the anti-Islamic forces, America and Israel, were trying to pit the armies of Muslim countries against their people, and also criticised the utterances of the russian president.

The district president of the MMA, Maulana Abdul Waheed Qureshi, said that seminaries were being raided to pressurize the Ulema not to speak on the issue of the uniform of President Gen Pervez Musharraf. He added that the MMA would never compromise on the issue.

Jamiat Uleam-i-Islam (Fazl) leader Maulana Taj Muhammad Nahiyoon and JUI-S leader Maulana Shabbir Ahmed also spoke on the occasion.

KHAIRPUR: A big procession, led by Dr Khalid Mehmood Soomro, general secretary of the Sindh chapter of the MMA, was taken out here, which comprised the Ulema and seminary students from all over the district.

The participants emerged from the Madressah Hamadia and after marching on the Station Road reached Panj Gulla Chowk where they staged a sit-in.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Mehmood said that the Wana operation was not against terrorists but the Mujahideen and demanded an immediate end to it. He said that seminaries were their cantonments and raids on them were against Islam and law.

NAUSHAHRO FEROZE: Led by Maulvi Abdul Rehman Dahraj, the MMA activists took out a procession from the Pir Masjid to the Allahwala Chowk here.

SHIKARPUR: A large number of the MMA activists took out a procession here to protest against the US attacks on Najaf in Iraq and the policy of the Pakistan government towards seminaries.

The procession started from the Masjid-i-Aqsa and, after marching on the Station Road, terminated at the Lakhi Gate where the particpants blocked the road.

DADU: The MMA activists took out a procession here and held a demonstration outside the press club for three hours.

NAWABSHAH: Hundreds of MMA activists took out a procession against the USA and President Musharraf here. The procession started from the Allahwali Masjid on the Sakrand road and after marching on main roads ended at the press club.

The protesters were carrying party flags and placards and raising slogans against USA and President Musharraf.

Speaking at the rally, MNA Maulana Asadullah Bhutto said that the incident of September 11 was a conspiracy hatched by the Jews against Muslims.

Challenging the government version, he said that those killed in Wana were Pakistanis and the government could not prove that they were foreigners.

THATTA: To protest against raids on seminaries and casualties and losses in Wana, the MMA took out a procession here.

JACOBABAD: On the call of the MMA, a huge procession was taken out here in protest against the American aggression on Iraq and Afghanistan and raids on seminaries in Pakistan.
