Aziz calls for steps to boost power output

ISLAMABAD Sept 9: Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz on Thursday called for adopting a proactive policy to boost power generation to meet growing demand of electricity in the country.

He was presiding over a meeting to review the demand and supply situation of electricity and gas in the country.

Punjab Governor made a presentation on the supply and demand of gas and electricity in different parts of Punjab. The prime minister directed the private power investment board to double its efforts to solicit investment in the power generation sector.

He attributed the growing demand of electricity to the overall economic growth and said the demand for more electricity would further increase with more economic activities in the country.

Mr Aziz said Wapda and private sector power companies must be helped to generate more electricity to meet increasing demand of the industrial sector. He also directed the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural resources to make plans for supply of gas to different places, keeping in view the potential to generate more economic activities in the country.

Meanwhile, the prime minister also held a meeting with minister and minister of state for Railways to review the performance of the Pakistan Railways and its future plans. The Prime Minister directed the minister and minister of state to improve the efficiency of the Railways and take steps to provide more facilities to passengers.

Earlier, a delegation of ministers of higher education, science and technology from Islamic countries called on Mr Aziz. Talking to them, the prime minister urged them to use their energies on promoting higher education, research and scientific education to keep pace with advanced nations of the world.

He said there was a need to bridge the knowledge gap between the Muslim Ummah and rest of the world and "we can achieve this goal only through collective efforts.

He pointed out that Pakistan had substantially increased its higher education budget in order to promote research-based scientific education, adding that there was no dearth of talents in the Muslim world. "What we need is to give priority to science and technology and utilise resources properly," he maintained.
