PTF not to hold trials for Davis Cup tie
By Our Sports Reporter
ISLAMABAD, Sept 9: Rashid Khan, the secretary of Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) said on Thursday that holding trials for this month's home Davis Cup tie against New Zealand would not make much sense.
"We have Aisamul Haq and Aqeel Khan, who are automatic selections while Nomi Qamar and Asim Shafik should also be part of the team keeping in view their recent performances."
Besides Nomi and Asim, the PTF has also invited Shahzad Khan and Wasif Cheema for a training camp due to begin at the PTF Complex here from Sunday. "The boys will then move to the Islamabad Club on the 20th."
The Davis Cup tie is to take place at the clay courts of Islamabad Club from Sept 24 to 26. "The boys have played so many tournaments recently, therefore I do not think there is a need to hold trials; still we have not made final decision on this."
Rashid said that he expected the Pakistan team to do well in the tie with Aqeel in top form and ace Aisam also available. There were doubts earlier on Aisam's participation but the ace player has now made it clear that he would be taking part in the competition.
The New Zealand squad is likely to arrive in Islamabad on Sept 20. The PTF is making elaborate arrangements for holding the event in a befitting manner.
