Pakistan readmitted to CPA


WASHINGTON, Sept 7: Pakistan on Tuesday was readmitted to the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and the head of the country's parliamentary delegation assured the body that "Pakistan will enthusiastically participate in all the parliamentary activities of the Association."

The CPA conference is now underway in Toronto, Canada. It was the first item on the agenda placed put before the 50th conference of the Association, "which agreed readily, and adopted the item unanimously."

"A formal announcement in this behalf was made instantly," Saleem Mahmood, Secretary of National Assembly of Pakistan told APP. Senate Chairman Muhammadmian Soomro is leading the Pakistan delegation. The Toronto meeting will continue till Sept 9.

Mr Soomro thanked the participants of the conference, and added Pakistan had always been an active member of the CPA and would resume its significant role.

The CPA has also announced creation of the Asia Region comprising Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Maldives for coordinating matters relating to CPA. India has been given a separate entity status, for the its size and number of its state assemblies. -APP
