NEW DELHI, Sept 2: India's cabinet on Thursday decided to set up a high-level committee to investigate the torching of a train carrying Hindu pilgrims that sparked widespread riots in Gujarat state two years ago.
Finance Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram told reporters the committee would be headed by a former supreme court judge, U.C. Banerjee, and would have to submit its report to the government within three months.
Fifty-nine people were killed when the train was attacked by a mob in Gujarat's Godhra town on Feb 27, 2002. The killings sparked a bloodbath. -AFP
