Suspect in Al Khobar assault surrenders

By Our Correspondent

RIYADH, Sept 2: A Saudi national wanted for involvement in attacks in Al Khobar in May has surrendered to the authorities.

A ministry of Interior source quoted by the official Saudi Press Agency confirmed on Thursday the surrender of Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Ahmed Al Miqren.

An interior ministry announcement said that Abdullah Al Miqren was wanted for forming a cell in the eastern province to carry out extremist activities. Three more members of the group had been arrested earlier in the week. Two of them are Saudi nationals and one expatriate.

This cell was reported to be responsible for the attack on the Wahat Abdulaziz compound in Al Khobar. This announcement came two days after the incident in the eastern city of Al Ahsa in which Saudi security forces claimed killing an extremist and arresting three others.

The incident took place while the car carrying the four men crashed into a checkpoint police had set up during an operation in Al Ahsa, where some Al Qaeda sympathizers were reportedly hiding. On the same day, a van carrying officials of the United States consulate in Jeddah came under fire.
