SIALKOT, Aug 31: Free textbooks provided by Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi to the district government have not yet been distributed among the deserving students of primary schools despite a lapse of five months.

This was stated by SES Teachers Association district president Rasheed Akhtar Dar while talking to newsmen here on Tuesday. He said thousands of students were facing educational loss due to the alleged poor planning of the education department.

Mr Dar said containers carrying the books had been lying in the godowns at the Government Jamia High School, Sialkot. Meanwhile, parents of the students have urged the chief minister to look into the matter.

RE-AUCTION: The Lahore High Court has ordered the Daska tehsil municipal administration to re-auction the contract of property transfer fee collection on Oct 7, 2004 and fixed Oct 8 the next hearing date.

LHC Chief Justice Chaudhry Iftikhar Husain announced the decision on a writ petition submitted by Daska-based contractors Mehmood Warraich and others. The petitioners were of the view that Daska tehsil Nazim Chaudhry Ejaz Ahmad Cheema awarded the contract to his favourite contractors for Rs15 million against contractor Mehmood Warraich's highest bid of Rs20 million, allegedly violating rules and regulations.

Earlier, on the LHC orders, Punjab anti-corruption establishment director-general Brig Muhammad Aslam Ghuman (retired) also conducted a detailed inquiry in this case.

JAIL OFFICIAL HELD: Police have arrested district jail's Elahi Bukhsh on charges of helping a prisoner escape. Muhammad Ehsan of Narowal, convicted by local courts in various theft cases, escaped from the jail on Monday.
