LAHORE, Aug 30: Pakistan and India are scheduled to swap 40 prisoners at the Wagah border on Tuesday. A Punjab government official told Dawn on Monday that the swap was part of the ongoing peace process and some of the steps agreed between the two countries during the latest talks.
The official said Pakistan was expected to hand over 19 prisoners to India and, in return, it would receive 21 from the other side of the border. The captives to be hand over to the Indian authorities include 11 from a Lahore jail, two from Rawalpindi and six from Sindh prisons.
These prisoners would be driven to the border by the Punjab government and the Indian High Commission officials and later swapped by security forces. Meanwhile, an Indian delegation presently visiting Pakistan in connection with Hazrat Baba Bulleh Shah's urs in Kasur would return home today.
A statement by the South Asia Partnership Pakistan said the delegation had met various personalities, including President Gen Pervez Musharraf, and exchanged views on the peace process.
