KASUR, Aug 30: Shopkeepers on Monday threw traffic out of gear for some five hours to protest the killing of a salesman on resistance by two armed robbers at Kot Radha Kishan.

Police said Ahsan Elahi was going back to his master's shop from Mohallah Judgewala after collecting cash from shopkeepers. Near his shop, two armed motorcyclists intercepted him and tried to snatch the cash, but he put up resistance. At this, the armed robbers opened fire on him, injuring him seriously. He died while being shifted to Jinnah Hospital, Lahore.

Later, the shopkeepers led by Anjuman-i-Tajran chairman Shaikh Shaukat Ali took out a rally and raised slogans against the police. The protesters started their march from Mohallah Judgewala and reached Pull Nullah Chowk after parading through various streets.

They also burnt tyres, blocked traffic for about five hours and demanded immediate arrest of the culprits. Raiwind Sadar police along with UC Nazim Mian Rauf reached the spot and succeeded in dispersing the protesters.

A case has been registered against the absconding killers. Meanwhile, a youth was axed to death over an old enmity at Jambar Kalan village, Phoolnagar. Niamat Ali (20) was working in his fields when accused Abdul Qayyum along with his two accomplices came there and killed him with repeated blows of axes.

Phoolnagar police have registered a case on the report of deceased's brother Muhammad Mansha. In another incident, an old man was crushed to death by a speeding car at Bhoey Aasal village.

Rasheed (68) was crossing the road when the speeding car coming from Pattoki hit him. He died on the spot. Chhanga Manga police are looking into the matter. At Choha Chirmat village, Kasur Sadar, a jobless youth allegedly committed suicide by taking poison. Shakeel Ahmad (22) had locked himself in a room and ended his life.
