Pakistani among 5 held in S. Arabia

RIYADH, Aug 29: Saudi security forces have arrested four suspected militants and a Pakistani national in different operations around the kingdom, newspapers reported on Sunday.

One suspect was arrested on Saturday in Al-Zaher district in the holy city of Makkah, 880 kilometres west of Riyadh, after descending from a nearby mountain and requesting water from a resident who informed police, Okaz newspaper said.

Another was nabbed the same day in Al-Hura in Madina, 870 kilometres west of the capital, the daily said, adding that the suspect, who does not figure on the kingdom's most-wanted list, did not resist arrest.

Asharq Al-Awsat, meanwhile, reported the arrest of two suspected militants and a Pakistani early Saturday in Buraydah region, 340 kilometres north of Riyadh. Interior ministry spokesman Brig Mansur al-Turki said the two militants surrendered without putting up any resistance, the London-based daily said, adding that he declined to reveal details about the Pakistani.

Some 90 people have been killed and hundreds wounded, many of them foreigners, in a string of terror attacks in the kingdom over the past 15 months. -AFP
