Sikh man's nationality a problem for Sweden

By Our Staff Reporter

LAHORE, Aug 26: A Swedish police team brought here on Thursday a Sikh man claiming to be Pakistani national. Officials said that Inspector Peter Nadhal, along with a policewoman, brought Par winder Singh by a PIA flight for confirmation of his nationality.

The immigration authorities told the Swedes that the man was not a Pakistani. "Par winder appears to be Indian but he is falsely claiming to be Pakistani," officials said.

The team would take him back to Sweden on Friday. The officials said that after rejecting an asylum appeal from Mr Singh, the Swedish government contacted the Indian embassy which did not accept that he was an Indian citizen.

Later, the Swedish government decided in consultation with the Pakistan embassy to take him to Pakistan for confirmation of his nationality.
