LAHORE: Govt to fund refresher courses for doctors

LAHORE, Aug 25: Punjab Health Minister Dr Tahir Ali Javed has said the government is paying special attention to providing world standard training facilities to doctors so that they can remain in touch with the latest developments and advancement in the sector.
Speaking at the inauguration of a workshop on Advanced Cardiac Management at the Fatima Jinnah Medical College on Wednesday, he said the government would extend all-out cooperation and grants for in-service training and refresher courses in hospitals.
He said the government was also providing training to doctors abroad so that they could gain knowledge of modern research and medical equipment. The minister also asked the officials concerned to arrange training camps and refresher courses for doctors serving in towns and villages.
He said the doctors and paramedics serving in rural areas should also be invited to attend the training courses being arranged in teaching hospitals. FJMC principal Prof Dr Akbar Chaudhry, cardiologist Dr Anjum Nadeem Butt and Ganga Ram Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Fazal Mahmood also spoke on the occasion.
WEBSITE LAUNCHING: Meanwhile, speaking at the launch of a website at dermatology department of Mayo Hospital, the minister said the government planned to launch a helicopter service in Lahore for shifting the seriously injured persons to hospital.
He said a surgical tower would also be constructed in the Mayo Hospital at a cost of Rs380 million, with a helipad on its roof. The surgical tower would have 250 beds and 16 operation theatres.
The minister said the Punjab government was also working to upgrade the tehsil headquarters hospitals and rural health centres and ensure availability of qualified staff in the rural areas. Mayo Hospital's dermatology Prof Dr Atif Kazmi, Dr Latif Malik and Medical Superintendent Dr Fayyaz Ranjha also spoke on the occasion.
