KARACHI: Water crisis persists in many localities

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Aug 25: At least eight apartment buildings, situated on Baghdadi's D D Chaudhry Road and those residing in and around Lyari's Bismillah Colony and Telephone Exchange are without water for the last 25 days.

The worst affected apartment buildings include Bhutto House, Baitul Hashim, Zeeshan Arcade, Haji Saleh Building, Yaqoob Sunara building, Irshad Manzil, Naz Chambers, Haji Gul Hassan House.

Residents of the affected locality deplored that although water shortage problem had been lingering on for the last several months, their supply is suspended since July 31.

"Apathy of the KWSB officials concerned could be gauged from the fact that although we have lodged at least 20 complaints with them and have also visited the nearby Moosa Lane pumping station several times, they have not yet bothered to rectify the fault responsible for lingering water issue," an elderly resident of D D Chaudhry Road regretted.

Accusing the valvemen of Moosa Lane's pumping station of creating an artificial water shortage in their locality, the residents of the affected locality demanded of the city Nazim and the KWSB managing director to transfer all those valves men who are posted there since long and as such have monopolised over matters concerning water distribution.

POWER FAILURE: Pumping of water to the sprawling townships of Orangi, Baldia and Surjani townships came to a halt at 4.20 pm on Wednesday following a power failure at the Hub pumping station.

Sources in the KWSB said that pumping of water from the Hub pumping station remained suspended from 4.20pm to 5.10pm on Wednesday as there was no electricity during this period.

SHORTAGE: Complaints of persisting water shortage have also been received from the residents of Orangi's Sector 11 1/2, Baloch Colony, Benazir Colony, Ghausia Baloch Colony, Pakistan Bazaar, Block D, Junaid Colony, parts of Shershah, SITE (both residential and industrial areas, Malir, Khokhrapar and Saudia Colony's sectors 8-A, 8-B and 9.

Residents of the affected areas complained that although their localities are either without water for weeks together or get scant supply with low pressure, the KWSB officials concerned seem least interested in resolving their lingering water issue despite a number of complaints lodged with them.

Residents of Saudia Colony deplored that since their locality often remains deprived of piped water, they have no choice but to either consume sub-soil unhygienic water at the cost of their health or purchase tankers at exorbitant rates. They demanded KWSB's MD to direct the concerned officials to immediately restore normal supply.
