ISLAMABAD, Aug 23: Pakistan made a fine start to their bid to retain their World Junior Squash team title whitewashing Switzerland and Wales on Monday.
Khalid Atlas, Yasir Butt and Farhan Mahboob featured in the victories which came about quite easy except for some minor hiccups against Wales.
Pakistan, defending their crown they won under coach Rehmat Khan at Chennai in 2002, were put on the way by Khalid who first knocked out Swiss Kevin Brechbuhl 9-0, 9-3, 9-3.
Yasir Butt, the losing finalist of the individual event, needed only 15 minutes to put his side 2-0 up, flogging Cyrill Ortuer 9-1, 9-2, 9-1. It was then left to Farhan Mahboob to complete the rout with? a 9-4, 9-0, 9-2 defeat of Benjamin Fischer in less than 20 minutes.
Later in the evening, Khalid dropped a game against Lewys Hurt of Wales before recovering to score a 0-9, 9-0, 9-0, 9-1 victory. Yasir was a 9-6, 9-1, 9-3 winner against Rob Wilkins with Farhan hammering Peter Creede 9-2, 9-1, 9-3 to see his side through to the second round.
Egypt, tipped to meet Pakistan in the final, inflicted a crushing 3-0 defeat on Kenya through Mahmoud Adel, Ahmed El Swaify and Omar Abu Zid. After Adel eliminated Amar Shah 9-4, 9-2, 9-4, Swaify and Zid quickly wrapped up their respective games to seal victory.
Swaify walloped Chiragh Shah 9-0, 9-0, 9-1 in 15 minutes and Zid brushed aside Ronak Shah 9-0, 9-0, 9-1. Australia found Scotland tough customers and had to fight hard to beat them 3-0.
Mathew Karwalski was on court for over an hour to overcome Alan Clyne 2-9, 3-9, 10-9, 9-2, 9-6 and Ryan Cuskelly too didn't have it easy against Graham Melvin in scoring a 9-7, 2-9, 10-8, 10-8 win. Steven Robinson also had to sweat in his game against Jamie Macaulay which he eventually won 9-3, 9-3, 4-9, 9-6.
