Former PIA MD acquitted

KARACHI Aug 17: Federal Anti-Corruption Court in Karachi headed by Judge Munir Ahmed Khawaja on Tuesday acquitted Air Vice-Marshal (retd) Waqar Azeem, former managing director of Pakistan International Airlines, in a corruption case for lack of evidence.

Waqar Azeem was tried on charges of corruption, embezzlement in a case relating to purchase of computers for PIA in late 1980. According to prosecution, the accused caused a $1,50,000 loss to the institution in the purchase of computers.

The court acquitting the ex-PIA MD for lack of evidence observed that the prosecution had failed to prove the allegation against accused beyond any reasonable doubt. -PPI
