MULTAN, Aug 14: Only 11 of the 28 'missing' motorbikes of the defunct literacy drive, Nai Roshni Scheme, have been returned by the illegal users on the expiry of the deadline set by the district education department.

The department had given the deadline of Aug 13 to the illegal users of the official motorbikes that were meant for the administrative staff to monitor the NRS campaign in the rural areas.

Among the illegal users of the official two-wheelers were top education department officials, including the director public instructions (elementary education), the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education chairman, executive district officers, and principals of institutions.

The two-wheelers returned to the department are SLE-6301, SLE-6302, SLE-6303, KW-3708, MNK-9442, KW-3716, MHA-3582, MHA-3530, VRB-4349, VRB-4025, KW-3686, and KW-3709.

It is learnt that Executive District Officer (Education) Chaudhry Nazeer Ahmad has written letters to the authorities concerned in the education and accounts departments to ensure recovery of the motorbikes.

He has reportedly urged the accounts department to stop paying salaries and pensions to the serving and retired officials, who have failed to meet the deadline.
