LAHORE, Aug 13: Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer on Friday claimed that he was quite happy with the team selected for the back-to-back tournaments in Europe.
Talking to newsmen after the first session of the training camp on the first day at the NCA, Woolmer believed that consistency was shown in selecting the team which was important at this time.
Pakistan will take part in the three-nation tournament in Holland this month, also involving India and world champions Australia, and later in the ICC Championship Trophy in England in September.
Woolmer said that Pakistan was capable of beating Australia. "They will be playing with 11 members and we also with the same strength and who will play better on the match day can win and I believe our boys can play better than them", he hoped.
Asked about Pakistan captain's vow they would win both the competitions, Woolmer said ultimately the aim was victory and the team would play with a positive frame of mind.
About the inclusion of Shahid Afridi despite his ordinary performances, Woolmer said that average was not much important in One-day but in the Test cricket. If a cricketer scored 25 runs off 20 balls that was important in One-day cricket and Afridi had the ability to do it, he said.
To a query if he considered Asim Kamal only for Test cricket, Woolmer said that the team was selected to maintain continuity. "Pakistan tested around 33 players only in 2003 which is not a good practice. Instead the focus should be on maintaining continuity," he said.
Woolmer said that the fitness level of the 14 members of the team was checked on the first day and the regular camp would start from Saturday. "We will do catching, batting, fielding, bowling practice in other days besides making strategy for the matches against India and Australia and then for the ICC Champions Trophy", he said.
The short training camp concludes on Monday. Meanwhile, 18 players selected as likely future prospects were instructed to report at the camp on Saturday.
The team management had demanded two umpires from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the training camp in order to finalise a complete chart about "No balls and wides" and to avoid it. Except Moin Khan, all 13 players had reported at the camp. Moin will join the camp on Saturday.
