LAHORE, Aug 10: Robbers on Tuesday shot dead the newly-wed wife of a journalist in Block-F of Jauhar Town. Married to Mian Khalil, a reporter of a Urdu daily, some three months ago, Dr Rukhsana Khalil had just come out of her house when three gunmen intercepted her car.
The gangsters snatched her purse. She put up resistance when they tried to snatch her jewellery. They opened fire and escaped with the purse.
The doctor got a bullet injury. Some passersby rushed her to hospital where she died. Her body was sent to the city mortuary for autopsy. A case was registered with no arrest.
DRUG PUSHER: City division police on Tuesday shot dead a handicapped alleged drug-pusher in a raid in Sanda. Accompanied by a source, Nadeem, alias Deema, a Bhatti police team raided the house to arrest the alleged drug-pusher, Saleem Butt, alias Cheema.
"Policemen were in plain clothes," the accused's mother Naziran Bibi told reporters and asked the authorities concerned as to why her unarmed son was killed. Was he a terrorist? she asked.
The woman said some 13 or 14 policemen stormed into her house. Her son was busy on the rooftop of the house. The source indicated towards Cheema, who, on seeing the police, tried to jump on the adjacent rooftop.
Naziran Bibi said the police present outside the house opened fire on her son. He got serious injuries, she said and added the police picked him up and bundled him into a van, and, later, claimed that he died on way to hospital. Should I trust the police version? she asked and alleged the police did not do any effort to rush his son to hospital.
Naziran said her son had an accident last year that rendered him handicapped. He was not in a position to escape, she said. The police, however, said that there were several drug cases against the deceased.
They said he had allegedly attempted to kidnap a policewoman. But her mother said that he had been cleared from all cases. The body was sent to the city mortuary for autopsy.
