Qualifier Nomi humbles 6th-seed Punna

ISLAMABAD, Aug 9: Pakistani qualifier Nomi Qamar sprang a surprise on Monday as he overran sixth seed Vishal Punna of India in the main round of the ITF Satellite Circuit tennis championship that began at Islamabad Club on Monday.

Nomi, a Davis Cup player, dropped the first set before marching into the next round with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory. The tournament's top seed, Aqeel Khan of Pakistan showed no mercy to Austria's Mio Puhanio whom he thrashed 6-3, 6-2 while Asim Shafik knocked out India's Jaco Mathew 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in a thrilling match.

Mehmood Khan was the only Pakistani to lose on Monday as he went down 0-6, 2-6 to Australia's Adrian Venturi. In another upset of the day, unseeded Indian Rahil Syed defeated his fellow countryman eighth seed Kamala Kannan without any difficulty 6-2, 6-1.

In other matches, Dimitry Ivanov of Uzbekistan showed India's Gurmehar Singh the door, winning 6-4, 6-3.

However, fourth seed Vijay Kannan, another Indian downed Kamil Filali of Morocco 6-2, 6-4. Meanwhile in the main round of the doubles competition, the Indian pair of Vikas Punna and Vishal Punna beat the top seeded team of Kamala Kannan and Vijay Kannan 7-5, 6-0 while second seeds Pirko Pehar (US) and Toshiaki Sakai (Japan) edged Aqeel Khan and Shahzad Khan 6-4, 7-6 (2).

Wild card entrants Jalil Khan and Asim Shafik however won their match against Austrians Leo Puhanio and Mio Puhanio 6-1, 4- 2 retd. On the other hand Jeevan Nedunchezhiy and S. Reddy of India edged Pakistani wild card pair of Adnan Khan and Akbar Pataudi 6- 4, 7-6 (7).
