SIALKOT, Aug 9: The district government has dissolved the Citizens Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) with immediate effect, terming its functioning illegal and against the general public interest.

The district government took the decision on a resolution presented to the district assembly session by Aadam key Nagra UC Nazim Chaudhry Maqbool Ahmad here on Monday. The session was presided over by convener Chaudhry Arsal Waqar Gumman.

Addressing the house, District Nazim Mian Naeem Javaid said the Sialkot CPLC was established by local financial tycoons without consenting the Sialkot district government and District Public Safety Commission (DPSC).

He said that there was no need of setting up of the CPLC in the presence of the district government and the DPSC. The district government, he said, had in the recent past received a number of complaints against the alleged corruption of CPLC members.

Mr Javed said the people belonging to various walks of life had informed the district government that CPLC members along with traffic police were creating harassment on various busy roads in Sialkot.

He assured the house that, if needed, the district government would constitute a new CPLC with the consultation of a district and sessions judge and DPSC members. Honest and capable persons would be elected members of the CPLC and it would be got notified by the Punjab governor, he said.

Meanwhile, former Sialkot DPSC chairperson Mrs Naseem Akhtar Khwaja said that under the law the establishment of the CPLC was illegal in the presence of DPSC. She said the sole aim of setting up of the DPSC was to provide relief to the masses in the district.

She alleged that the working of the DPSC was being hampered because of the interference of CPLC in all government departments. Speaking on a privilege motion, Nazim Chaudhry Maqbool Ahmad urged upon the house to condemn the so-called CPLC for its poor performance.

He informed the house that the membership fee of the CPLC was Rs0.5 million and all its existing members were industrialists, who were allegedly earning millions of rupees by misusing the CPLC name.

At this, the house unanimously passed the resolution against the CPLC and recommended for its dissolution immediately.

TAVI RECEDING: The 85 far-off border villages of Bajwat remained cut-off from the rest of the district for the third consecutive day on Monday as the boatmen were not ready to face violent waves of river Tavi.

District Flood Control Office authorities confirmed that although the water was receding, it was still risky to operate boats. Meanwhile, Sialkot DCO Syed Tahir Raza Naqvi, while presiding over a meeting of the flood committee on Monday, directed the authorities concerned to make alternative arrangements for reconnecting Bajwat villages with the district.

The DCO also visited Nullah Dek's rural areas in Pasrur and reviewed flood protection arrangements.

TEACHERS: The district government has ordered deployment of teachers at the District Flood Control Centre for performing emergency duties, deviating from the old practice of engaging revenue and irrigation staff.

The DCO however took notice of this 'official mistake' and directed the authorities concerned to deploy employees of revenue and irrigation departments to do the needful.
