HYDERABAD, Aug 9: The Atta Chakki Owners Association, Hyderabad, at an urgent meeting held here on Monday, rejected a decision of the provincial food department to supply 18 bags of wheat per week to each Chakki in the city in August.
The meeting, presided over by Haji Nawab Ali, termed the decision unreasonable and demanded that the food department should issue a reasonable quota of wheat to the Chakkis to help them supply flour to shops.
It reminded the government that 95 per cent of the city residents consumed flour supplied by Chakkis. It noted that the food department had issued wheat quota for the first week of August on August 5 and added that it was extremely difficult for 236 Chakki owners to lift 1,000 tonnes of wheat within two days.
The meeting unanimously resolved that no Chakki owner would lift wheat if the supply of wheat was not increased. It appealed to Sindh Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim to direct the food department to increase the quota of the Chakkis of Hyderabad to enable them to fulfil requirement of consumers.
HDA: The Hyderabad Development Authority announced here on Monday that the Sindh government had appointed Tahir Ahmed as director-general of the authority and Shoukat Hayat Bhutto as managing director of the Water and Sanitation Agency.
Mr Ahmed, who had previously remained the MD of Wasa, accompanied by Mr Bhutto, held a detailed meeting with executive engineers of the HDA/Wasa to discuss a strategy for rainy season. He directed the executive engineers to ensure availability of material and staff to meet a rain emergency.
ROAD PROJECT: Shopkeepers held a protest demonstration at the Gharib Nawaz Bridge Chowk on Monday against delay in completion of the Shah Makki road project. Talking to journalists, Fayaz Awan, Shabbir Kaimkhani, Yaqoob Memon and others said the road was in a dilapidated condition, affecting business activities. They said there were no streetlights on the Gharib Nawaz Bridge. They said the sewerage problem of Qadam Gah Maula Ali also remained unresolved.
