Aziz waits for party nod: Public meetings
By Ashraf Mumtaz
LAHORE, Aug 6: Although his friends and foes believe that he will win his Attock seat easily, prime minister-designate Shaukat Aziz is very keen to visit his constituency and address some meetings there.
However, dates for such meetings would be decided after a go-ahead both from the party and the administration, party sources say. Security for Mr Aziz had been tightened after a recent attack on him in which he, miraculously, remained unhurt.
Since then, his supporters are campaigning for him in the constituency. People of the area also visit him at his Islamabad residence to assure him their support and listen from him what he would do after becoming the head of government.
"Personally, he is very keen to visit his constituency and address public meetings there. But the party and the administration have not taken a final decision. After clearance, he will schedule some meetings", the sources said.
To establish a contact with his voters and supporters, the finance minister has reduced his working hours. While previously he used to work from 9am to 9pm, for the last few days he returns from his office at 4pm and spends the rest of his time for campaigning.
He is meeting with three to four delegations from his constituency every day. Sources say that he has made up his mind what areas he would focus on after becoming the prime minister.
Instead of wasting energies on a number of sectors at the same time and getting no results, Mr Aziz has selected such sectors which need immediate attention. Decisions about the cabinet will be taken in consultation with the party and its allies.
Mr Aziz is fully satisfied with the results of his campaign conducted so far. He got an opportunity to contact a large number of people when he submitted his nomination papers and on the day of scrutiny. During the second phase of his campaign, he addressed some public meetings and met a large number of people at dinners.
