MIRPURKHAS: Girl dies of polio

MIRPURKHAS, Aug 5: An 11-month-old girl, Shabana, daughter of Sikandar Bujir, had died of polio in Umerkot. This was disclosed by the surveillance officer of the World Health Organization , Mirpurkhas and Tharparkar, Dr Akhlaq Ahmed, while talking to newsmen on Thursday.

He said the patient, a resident of Umerkot's Unar Paro, was brought to the taluka hospital on July 16 in a serious condition. Dr Ahmed said investigations were conducted about the cause of her death and sample of stool was sent to laboratory in Islamabad. He said the test report revealed positive virus P1 (acute poliomyelitis).

He said it was the first case of polio detected officially in the district after few years. Dr Ahmed appealed to parents to get their five-year-old children immunised during the polio eradication campaign. He said a seminar was organized in Umerkot on Thursday by the WHO to create an awareness among people about polio disease.

KARO-KARI: A girl, Sahiba, 16, was shot dead by her brother on the pretext of karo-kari in Sabz Ali Gurgej village near Naokot on Wednesday. The killer, Bashir Gurgej, was arrested by the Talhi police.
