LAHORE, Aug 3: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to have paid chief executive and treasurer from now onwards. Currently, Ramiz Raja is working as the chief executive while the post of treasurer has been lying vacant
since the resignation of Mohammad Naeem.
PCB's first choice as chief executive is Ramiz but for that he has to resign from Allied Bank besides giving up TV commentary to be a full-time employee of the board. The decisions were taken in the light of a report presented by a private university on the request of PCB chairman Shaharyar M. Khan.
The report raised serious concerns over the honorary basis system adopted for these important posts since the PCB is a financially sound body. Ramiz, who enjoys perks like a car, free petrol, phone and TA/DA facilities, despite working on honorary basis.
Former PCB chairman Tauqir Zia, who appointed Ramiz as chief executive, in a press statement had also said that he (Ramiz) should not do commentary during the last India-Pakistan series.
Besides working as a commentator Ramiz had also appeared in advertisements for a soft drink. Ramiz is away from home since June 25. He did commentary on Asia Cup held in Sri Lanka and will stay there to cover the Sri Lanka-South Africa series.
His absence from home could prolong till September for the ICC Championship Trophy scheduled in London. Sources say the PCB is not ready to accept Ramiz's absence from the board for such a long time.
Shaharyar is expected to brief the PCB Patron-in-Chief, President of Pakistan Gen Pervez Musharraf on this issue before taking a final decision.
