UNITED NATIONS, Aug 3: UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said on Tuesday that Sudanese government has got the message "loud and clear " and they are moving towards implementation of the UN Security Council resolution.
Talking to reporters upon his arrival from a trip to Africa, Mr Annan observed "I think the Resolution is very clear that if they do not perform there will be consequences. I think the Government of Sudan has got the message loud and clear. And you can tell by their reaction."
Last week the Security Council gave Sudanese government 30 days to implement the resolution asking it to rein in the marauding militias or face economic and diplomatic consequences.
Mr Annan pointed out that "Yesterday, at a meeting in Khartoum of the Joint Monitoring Mechanism, which was co-chaired by [Jan] Pronk, my Special Representative, and the Foreign Minister, they went over what needs to be done, and what further steps the Government can take to protect the population. " "So my sense is that they are moving in the direction of implementation," Mr Annan added.
Asked to clarify whether Sudanese government has 90 days or 30 days, UN Chief said: "Yes, I think there is some confusion. "When we met on the 1st of July there was a 90-day agreement on a humanitarian emergency plan.
"It was put on the table as to how the humanitarian community is going to organize itself to deliver maximum assistance in 90 days, and what was required of the Government particularly in the area of access and offering visas to NGOs and UN officials as well as allowing supplies and equipment to come in without impediments."
