KARACHI: Resettlement work at Hawkesbay in full swing

KARACHI, Aug 2: Rehabilitation work for the families affected by Lyari Expressway is in full swing amid smooth execution of development projects continuing for several months.

Officials of the Lyari Expressway Resettlement Project have pointed out that the development of infrastructure on all three sites - Hawkesbay, Taisar Goth and Baldia Town - had been accelerated to ensure the families' resettle as soon as possible.

The first allotted rehabilitation site among the three is Hawkesbay where work on infrastructure is near completion. Allotment of plots at Taisar Goth is under way whereas the process in Baldia Town will be started in a few months following completion of basic infrastructure.

Each of the affected families has been allotted one 80 square yard plot in compensation for their residence along the expressway route. Most of the families dislodged from Lyari Town have been resettled in Hawkesbay where electricity, hospitals, schools, water, and other facilities are being provided to them.

A visit to the site on Monday showed that major road infrastructure has almost been completed whereas carpeting of streets and service roads is under way. For Baldia Town site, tenders for infrastructure development have been issued and work for the construction of a school building and a shopping centre has been completed.

Demarcation of plots and construction of the outer boundary wall has also been completed. Project Director Shafiqur Rahman Paracha told PPI that resettlement of such a huge population in a short span of time was a record, incredible and appreciable.

The allottees who were earlier reluctant to have a residence here, are now eager to move sooner because of the availability of all essential facilities, according to Mr Paracha.

He said that the government had not just rehabilitated the dislodged families, but also attached due priority to the provision of a changed environment.

It was paying special attention to education, he said, adding that about eight to 10 schools, to be run by government and NGOs, had been set up there with both primary and secondary level education facility. -PPI
