KARACHI: EU-donated lab becomes obsolete

KARACHI, July 30: Advisor to chief minister for environment and alternate energy, Noman Saigol, met the Acting US Consul-General at Karachi, Ms Kay Anskey, at her residence here on Friday.

During the meeting, they discussed various environmental issues of Sindh. Noman Saigol pointed out various areas for proposed US assistance to protect, improve and rehabilitate the environmental conditions here.

Identifying the areas of assistance, the advisor apprised Ms Anskey of most urgent need to address the issue of waste water and said its solution lay in the installation of domestic and industrial waste water treatment plants in major cities and towns of the province.

He pointed out that at present untreated industrial and domestic effluent is being disposed of into the sea and inland water as a result of which various water-borne diseases, like Hepatitis, are emerging.

He said that one of the major environment related issues is degradation of ambian air quality, particularly in the urban areas where air pollution is caused by industrial and vehicular emission. -APP
