SHEIKHUPURA, July 27: Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi on Tuesday directed Law Minister Raja Basharat to make a draft law against magicians to eliminate this menace from society.

During his visit to the house of Pervez Iqbal whose son, Tajammal Hussain, 6, was killed by some people believed to be magicians at Moazzam Colony, Muridke, he said a major operation would be launched shortly against such elements in the province.

The chief minister gave away cheques amounting to Rs100,000 each to the six families whose children had been slaughtered by magicians during the last two and a half months.

Later, at the Town Hall in Narang Mandi, a number of people complained of police negligence in arresting outlaws. After listening to the grievances, Mr Elahi ordered suspension of Narang Mandi SHO Saeed Chaudhry, an inspector, two SIs, five ASIs, two head constables and 20 constables.

He ordered officiating IG Syed Azhar Hassan Nadeem to depute honest and dutiful staffers in all police stations of the Punjab to maintain law and order. District Nazim Chaudhry Tawakalullah Virk, MNAs, MPAs, tehsil and union Nazims, and heads of various government departments were also present on this occasion.

Earlier, on his arrival at Narang Mandi, as many as 20 women members of the district government staged a rally demanding transfer of Sheikhupura DCO Tariq Najeeb Najmi for his alleged non-cooperation with the district government.

CONSTABLE KILLED: A police constable was killed in an encounter with robbers near Malikpur on the Lahore-Jaranwala Road on Tuesday morning. A Mangtanwala police party found five robbers looting passersby after blocking the road with a trailer.

On seeing the police, the robbers opened fire which was retaliated. In the shootout which continued for two hours, constable Tufail was killed, while the robbers managed to escape. The police vehicle was also damaged in the crossfire.

SHOT DEAD: A man was shot dead by some unidentified assailant(s) in his Zaman Park house on Tuesday morning. The motive behind the incident could not be ascertained. Saddar police are investigating.
