CARSON, July 26: Lindsay Davenport won her fourth JP Morgan Chase Open title by stunning top seed Serena Williams 6-1, 6-3 on Sunday.
Davenport played superbly to win her second title in two weeks by dictating play from the baseline or otherwise attacking the strangely erratic Williams' second serve.
The number three seed came into the final with a 2-9 career record against Williams and had lost their last four meetings. Davenport, who also won in Stanford last week, moves up to number four in the world rankings.
The 28-year-old will attempt go for her second 'California triple' next week in Carlsbad. The last time she managed that feat was in 1998 when the American went on to win the US Open title.
TITLE RETAINED
INDIANAPOLIS: American top seed Andy Roddick held on to his RCA Championship title with a comfortable 6-2, 6-3 victory over Germany's Nicolas Kiefer on Sunday. World number two Roddick became the first player to retain the title in Indianapolis since the great Pete Sampras had back-to-back victories there in 1991 and 1992.
Roddick's three aces in the final game rounded off a fine performance against his outclassed German opponent who made 21 unforced errors as he slumped to defeat in less than an hour.
It was Roddick's fourth tournament win of the year, after victories in San Jose, Miami and Queen's Club in London, and his third straight appearance in a final. He reached this year's Wimbledon final where he lost to Switzerland's world number one Roger Federer.
CANAS TRIUMPHS
UMAG: Argentine Guillermo Canas won a second consecutive title when he beat Italian Filippo Volandri 7-5, 6-3 to win the Croatia Open on Sunday. Sixth seed Canas also won the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart last week, when he beat compatriot Gaston Gaudio.
It was Volandri's second consecutive defeat in an Umag final after he lost last year to Carlos Moya of Spain. -Reuters
