KARACHI: Water crisis in Saddar Town localities

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, July 26: Various parts of the city, including some VIP areas in Saddar Town, are without water for the last couple of days, leaving no choice for the residents of the affected localities to either buy private tankers or to consume sub-soil unhygienic water.

The affected areas include Chief Minister's House, Chief Secretary House, the US Consulate, Tughlaq House, a number of five-star hotels and clubs, Bath Island, Clifton, Kharadar, Mithadar, Haquani Chowk, Pakistan Chowk and Burnes Road.

Confirming that the above localities are facing an acute water shortage for the last two days, sources in the KWSB attributed the cause of suspension of supply to some internal fault, saying work was under way to remove the problem and normal supply to the affected area is expected be restored by Tuesday.

Meanwhile, complaints of persisting water shortage continue to pour in newspaper offices from the localities hooked to the Hub dam source. The hard-hit localities include different sectors of Orangi, Baldia, North Karachi, Shershah, SITE (Both residential and industrial areas).

Residents of the affected localities regretted that although they are facing an acute water shortage for the one month mainly owing to leakages in pipelines, the KWSB officials concerned have not yet bothered to repair the leaking pipelines.

"It was because of leaking pipelines that we are supplied water with a low pressure," a councillor of Orangi Town's Union Council No-9 said, adding that water being wasted from the leaking pipelines was, on the one hand, creating water shortage and, on the other, it was causing damage to the roads which are already in a bad shape.
