Livestock export

Published July 27, 2004

ISLAMABAD, July 26: The ministry of food, agriculture and livestock (Minfal) has moved a summary to the federal cabinet for lifting of ban on export of livestock. Informed sources told Dawn on Monday that the summary is expected to be considered in the next meeting of the cabinet.

The former prime minister, Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali in the month of April 2004 last suspended the export of livestock following the huge export of animals particularly to Afghanistan, which had raised the prices of meat in the local markets.

The government has authorized the Minfal to issue NOCs for export of livestock. Earlier, it was issued by the ministry of commerce.

The statistics show that the total value of export of meat stood at more than $14 million during the 2003-04 period as against the $9 million during the same period last year, indicating an increase of 54 per cent.
