KARACHI: Dug-up roads irk motorists, pedestrians

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, July 25: At least three major streets of Gulshan-i- Iqbal's bock 13-D/1 are in a dilapidated condition since long, causing inconvenience to motorists and damage to vehicles.

Although one of these streets leads to Yasinabad, and most motorists while avoiding heavy traffic congestion, which often occur at Gharibabad traffic intersection, take the route for proceeding towards Federal B Area and North Nazimabad, the town administration concerned seem to be least interested in undertaking repair work of the street.

All these partly devastated streets are situated in and around Gaylani tomb and several apartment buildings such as Hassan Apartments, Cosy Homes, Dashtiar Pride, Hassan Apartments (Extension), Al-Azam and a number of other housing projects.

The Gulshan Town Administration had recently excavated a portion of these streets for its repair and had removed its upper surface, consisting of bitumen and gravel. However, work is being delayed for the last one-and-a-half months, on one pretext or the other, causing problems to a large number of motorists who use the route.

To the utter surprise of people, those who were awarded the task of repairing the road about one-and-a-half months back, have dumped the bitumen taken out from the road on the adjacent footpaths, forcing the pedestrians to walk on the busy road amidst vehicular traffic.

People residing in Gulshan-i-Iqbal's block 13-D/1, and who are the worst sufferers owing to dilapidated condition of the road, want to know from the officials of Gulshan Iqbal Town of the logic behind excavating the road when they had no resources to undertake the repair works of the road.

The road has literally been converted into a dirt track, as fresh gravels has been put on the road and left unattended to, blocking the passage for motorists and causing hardships to the pedestrians.

Area people have urged authorities to come to their rescue and order an early completion of the work, besides ordering an inquiry against the people responsible for dumping the on footpaths.

Similarly, in Malir, an entire track of Begum Khursheed Road has been dug up by the town administration for repairing a pipeline, and only one side of the road is available for vehicular traffic.

Such a situation often leads to congestion on the road and pedestrians suffer as the footpath remains occupied by vendors or by shopkeepers who have placed paraphernalia on the footpath, leaving no space for the movement of pedestrians.
